What is a Disciple?

The simplest definition of a disciple is to be a learner or follower; to be a pupil under a teacher. A disciple chooses to accept instruction given to him by someone and makes the instruction the basis for how he conducts himself.

“So in the time of the disciples, someone who called you a follower of Christ would expect to see your life busy about relationship and reformation. This identity was so clear in Christ’s day that calling someone a follower would be no different from saying to someone, ‘He’s a trucker’ or ‘She’s a doctor.’ It defined the privilege and responsibility of their role as followers. It spoke volumes about who they were and explained why they lived, thought, and acted as they did.” Dr. Joseph Stowell, Following Christ

Here are a few:

We believe people want to give.
We don’t get up and compel or manipulate people to give. The box is in the back of the worship center at the entrance/exit. Give to your heart’s desire and sacrificially. No major spiels are made about it every Sunday.

Living a Fruitful Life in Christ

Many people measure the fruitfulness of their lives by the quantity of their activities instead of the quality of their character. Who and what you are is more important than what you do. The Bible emphasizes being and character as you grow to be more like Christ. Becoming more like Christ does not happen by accident.

Growing in the Fruit of the Spirit

The True Vine and Branches

In John 15:1-5, the Lord Jesus describes the relationship that we must have with Him in order to bear the spiritual fruit that God wants us to bear. He uses the metaphor of the vine and branches.

Our mission is clear with every message Pastor John teaches and preaches: Growing relationships with God and people, bringing salvation to all.

Pastor John and his family (his late wife and 4 children) moved to the area in 2005 to start our church in Frisco. In 2013, the church family moved to Crossroads and has grown strong. Amy and her two children came into all of our lives in 2023, and we are most grateful for how God has blessed us with them all. John and Amy were married in March, 2024.

What is Mankind's Biggest Problem? Is it Sin?

What is Sin?

Sin is best defined as anything done that isn’t done in love.

Sin is a word that means missed the mark. Love is the mark; sin is missing that mark.

For example, if someone is using cocaine with a friend, why is that wrong? Even if the friend is happy about it, if it causes their God-given life’s purpose to not be able to be accomplished, I’m a part of that. If I participate in anything that will shorten their lifespan, bring harm or punishment to them, or cause separation from those who love them, that’s sin.

When the Lord Jesus Christ left this earth to be with His Heavenly Father, He knew that His followers, being human, would be forgetful creatures. Because of this, He ordained that certain practices should be observed regularly by the church that would serve as reminders to Christians of all ages of His death and resurrection. We call these the ordinances of the church. At our church, we regularly observe two ordinances: The Lord’s Table (communion) and Christian baptism.

Stewardship involves managing what someone else owns. A steward is like the trustee of a fund or organization: others trust him or her to wisely manage assets on their behalf. Because God bought us with the blood of His Son, all that we are and have—including our lives and possessions—belong to Him.
As those who are accountable to God, we must become responsible and trustworthy stewards of the time, physical bodies, money and possessions, gifts, and relationships God has given us.

And it does seem like these things come in waves, when suddenly a lot of people and situations need your attention all at once. Don’t give up. Instead, give it up – to God. Give up your frustration and anxiety to God. Don’t quit. Keep working at it and eventually you will be glad you did.

If it’s in the Bible, we believe it, with no extremes.

Salvation

Salvation happens when a person confesses and repents of their sin and accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior (Matt. 3:2; Jn. 3:16; Lk. 24:47). We call it being saved. We are saved from God’s eternal judgment by entering into a covenant relationship with Him through Jesus. It isn’t just praying a prayer to ask God to forgive you. It’s more than that. When you and I stand before God, and we will, it will be about our relationship with Him and how we lived it out with others. Did we enter into a good relationship with God (Matt. 7:23)? The evidence of salvation is then found in how we live, and how we relate with others (Gal. 5:22-23). Jesus said to love God, and love people (Mk. 12:30-31). If we can’t love people we can see and touch, how can we begin to believe we truly love God (1 Jn. 4:20)?

MAPS coordinates workers to assist churches and ministry institutions with construction and evangelism projects. Marcus said, “We do that through RV Volunteers, Church Teams, and Missionary Associates. One of the great aspects of MAPS is that it serves the other ministries of U.S. Missions as well as local churches and in turn the rest of the world. I believe if we strengthen the church in America, we strengthen our reach to the world.”

Introduction

You are a special person. You are special because God created you. Your value comes from God. You are special because God says you are valuable to Him. He genuinely cares about you and what happens to you.
Let’s open God’s Word and take a closer look at 4 truths:

God created you

God is present and knows you

God loves you

God adopted you into His family

God Created You

1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
3Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
4God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.
5God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” There was an evening, and there was a morning: one day.

Introduction

Man does not have the capability to fully understand God. God is perfect and holy, while man is morally flawed and sinful. To bridge the gap and to connect God and man, God took the form of a man in Jesus Christ. Without Jesus there would be no possibility of having a relationship with God.

15He is the exact living image [the essential manifestation] of the unseen God [the visible representation of the invisible], the firstborn [the preeminent one, the sovereign, and the originator] of all creation. 16For by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth, [things] visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him [that is, by His activity] and for Him. 17And He Himself existed and is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. [His is the controlling, cohesive force of the universe.] 18He is also the head [the life-source and leader] of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will occupy the first place [He will stand supreme and be preeminent] in everything. 19For it pleased the Father for all the fullness [of deity—the sum total of His essence, all His perfection, powers, and attributes] to dwell [permanently] in Him (the Son), 20and through [the intervention of] the Son to reconcile all things to Himself, making peace [with believers] through the blood of His cross; through Him, [I say,] whether things on earth or things in heaven.
Colossians 1:15-20 AMP

Introduction

Many have heard about the last events of Jesus’ life on earth—sometimes called the Passion of the Christ. He was falsely accused, tried, and condemned. Then He suffered as a common criminal, hung from a cross until dead, and three days later rose from the dead. But few people understand the meaning of these events. Let’s begin to explore Jesus’ life, His death, and His resurrection—and what it all means.

Introduction

Jesus rose from the dead, and now He lives! When He ascended into heaven, the angels predicted that He would come back again some day.

9After he had said this, he was taken up as they were watching, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10While he was going, they were gazing into heaven, and suddenly two men in white clothes stood by them. 11They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen him going into heaven.” Acts 1:9-11 CSB

Introduction

Making a commitment to a person is basic to any long-term relationship. It is no different with God, who is your Creator, your Lord, your Savior, and the Lover of your soul. He has made an eternal commitment to His people and has sealed it through the work of Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit. He desires for us to commit ourselves to following Jesus and the ways of Jesus.

Introduction

The great need of the hour among persons spiritually hungry is twofold: first, to know the Scriptures, apart from which no saving truth will be vouchsafed by our Lord; the second, to be enlightened by the Spirit, apart from whom the Scriptures will not be understood. — A. Tozer

Moses expressed how crucial and significant God’s Word was to the people he led in Deuteronomy 32:45-47.

45When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, 46he said to them, “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. 47They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.” Deuteronomy 32:45-47 NIV

Introduction

Communication is essential for any growing relationship, including our relationship with God. Prayer is our means of speaking to God and listening as He speaks to us.

The Spirit links Himself with us in our praying and pours His supplications into our own. We may master the technique of prayer and understand its philosophy; we may have unlimited confidence in the veracity and validity of the promises concerning prayer. We may plead them earnestly. But if we ignore the part played by the Holy Spirit, we have failed to use the master key. —J. Oswald Sanders

Introduction

Have you ever thought of witnessing not in terms of salesmanship or persuasion, but in terms of matchmaking? At its very heart, witnessing is the process and privilege of introducing the Bridegroom (Jesus) to prospective brides (nonbelievers). Jesus truly is the Lover of souls, wooing His chosen beloved into permanent surrender to Him with His self-sacrifice and unfailing love. If we ignore the wooing and try to force a union, we can miss the very heart of the new life in and with Jesus Christ.

Introduction

Today’s world is flooded with inventions that meet people’s needs quickly and easily: instant foods, instant communication, and instant information available on just about anything. However, there is no such thing as instant maturity in following Jesus. Becoming a believer begins a lifelong adventure of knowing God better, loving Him more, and being transformed into the likeness of Christ.

2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Introduction

Jesus Christ is both Savior and Lord—not just the Lord of His followers but also the Lord of all lords. Not all people presently acknowledge Him as their Lord, but that does not alter the fact of His lordship. Someday in eternity, every single person will acknowledge Christ as Lord. Until then, anyone who is willing to trust Him totally has the privilege of coming under Christ’s influence and obeying His lordship. Christ becomes our Lord first by a decision made through trusting Him and then by the daily practice of willing obedience to His commands. Under the lordship of Jesus, we can have complete confidence in His loving protection.

Introduction

Many people measure the fruitfulness of their lives by the quantity of their activities instead of the quality of their character.

Introduction

Living out the moral absolutes of God’s Word is not easy or popular. In this world, many people seek freedom from all moral responsibility. Followers of Jesus have the privilege and obligation to live by biblical values. As we do, our confidence in God’s goodness grows. We can experience more and more how God’s will is “good, pleasing, and perfect.”

1Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2 NIV

Introduction

Living as a whole, integrated person can be challenging. We tend to put on masks, saying one thing but contradicting it by how we live. We struggle each day with issues of right versus wrong and good versus evil. We tend to rationalize our behavior and compromise God’s standards of integrity. We may explain away or ignore these sins. These are the vices of the virtuous—sins that may have become accepted as the norm. But God is holy, and we must not allow any compromise with sin to infiltrate our lives. Because God is light, He will graciously reveal what we try to hide so that we can grow in integrity.

Introduction

Our character is like gold. We need to receive God’s deep mining and refining processes to become more like Christ. He uses various processes to mature us by refining or purifying our character. But unresolved questions may stretch us: “Where is divine goodness in human misery? Why does God not stop pain, especially if it seems undeserved?”

Because suffering is difficult to understand, we may hear confusing comments from others.

Introduction

Jesus is God’s loving, living expression of Himself to us. Similarly, the Bible is God’s written expression of Himself and His will. Without these two living revelations of God, we could not know who God is or how to find life through Him. Because God Himself authored the Bible and the Holy Spirit is present as we read, it is completely dependable and sufficient to shape our convictions and help us live life well. When we face hard decisions in life, we can trust the Word of our trustworthy God to guide us into true and wise choices. Ultimately, trust is involved in committing your all to the authority and sufficiency of Scripture.

Introduction

In our spiritual lives, we have no choice but to engage unseen forces. Why? Because Satan and his demons are in a struggle to the death. They fiercely oppose God and the love of God’s heart: people. This battle of two kingdoms rages over the hearts and minds of people. The Devil is fierce, ruthless, and loves to destroy (John 10:10). He wants to rob your heart and smash your soul! He attacks your love story with God and the love stories of others. As if our struggle against sin were not enough, this enemy uses our own sin against us. Our confidence is that Jesus fights victoriously for all those who love Him. We must join this battle with this assurance:

Introduction

What a privilege we have to help young believers become established in experiencing God’s fullness! This encouragement of others toward spiritual transformation is a responsibility for all followers of Jesus. Some call it establishing or mentoring or discipling or follow-up after a new spiritual birth, but whatever term we use, it means partnering with God and other believers in Christ to help another become spiritually mature. While the whole community should be a part of this transformational process, we will focus here on one-to-one relationships. There is always someone who needs your help.

Introduction

God is concerned for all mankind on an individual basis. With the billions of people in the world today, you might wonder how it is possible to have an effective part in communicating God’s love to so many. We can do this by advancing the gospel so that spiritual generations will be planted and become fruitful all over the world.

World vision is getting on your heart what is on God’s heart—the world. —Dawson Trotman, Founder of The Navigators

Growing relationships with God and people… bringing salvation to all.

As a corporate chaplain serving more than 2,000 employees at businesses all around the Dallas area, John is head-deep in the storms of life with people of nearly every age, religion, social status, and background. Jesus came to alter the lives of everyone He touched by giving them Truth, real answers, and demonstrating what genuine relationships look like. Moreover, He came to provide access to God without it being about religious ceremonies and man-power. Jesus had a church in mind when He was on the cross. What did that church look like? He called it His Bride. Even more personal, His body… the body of Christ…

Angela, 53, passed away on Sunday morning, 1/16/22. Her first day in heaven was her favorite day on earth, Sunday. We can only imagine how much she enjoyed the worship from all over the world that day.

Angela was born to her parents, J. Colen and Carol Lassiter, in Fairhope, Alabama, on November 25, 1968. When her father moved to pastor a church in St. Louis, there Angela met and then married the love of her life, Pastor/Chaplain John Eaton, in 1993. Together, they brought four beautiful and meaningful children into the world and welcomed a son-in-law into the family last year: John Michael (28), Laura Ashley (25) and husband Jacob, James-David (21), and Emma-Grace (18).
