What is a Disciple?

The simplest definition of a disciple is to be a learner or follower; to be a pupil under a teacher. A disciple chooses to accept instruction given to him by someone and makes the instruction the basis for how he conducts himself.

This identity was so clear in Christ’s day that calling someone a follower would be no different from saying to someone, ‘He’s a trucker’ or ‘She’s a doctor.’ It defined the privilege and responsibility of their role as followers. We believe people want to give. We don’t get up and compel or manipulate people to give. The box is in the back of the worship center at the entrance/exit. Give to your heart’s desire and sacrificially. No major spiels are made about it every Sunday.

Pastor John and Amy have a large blended family of 7 kids (teens to adults) and one grandchild who all love God and their church family very much. Our mission is clear with every message Pastor John teaches and preaches: Growing relationships with God and people, bringing salvation to all.

Pastor John and his family (his late wife and 4 children) moved to the area in 2005 to start our church in Frisco. In 2013, the church family moved to Crossroads and has grown strong. Amy and her two children came into all of our lives in 2023, and we are most grateful for how God has blessed us with them all. John and Amy were married in March, 2024.

What is Sin?

Sin is best defined as anything done that isn’t done in love.

Sin is a word that means missed the mark. Love is the mark; sin is missing that mark.

For example, if someone is using cocaine with a friend, why is that wrong? Even if the friend is happy about it, if it causes their God-given life’s purpose to not be able to be accomplished, I’m a part of that. If I participate in anything that will shorten their lifespan, bring harm or punishment to them, or cause separation from those who love them, that’s sin.

The Ordinances

When the Lord Jesus Christ left this earth to be with His Heavenly Father, He knew that His followers, being human, would be forgetful creatures. Because of this, He ordained that certain practices should be observed regularly by the church that would serve as reminders to Christians of all ages of His death and resurrection. We call these the ordinances of the church. At our church, we regularly observe two ordinances: The Lord’s Table (communion) and Christian baptism.

Stewardship involves managing what someone else owns. A steward is like the trustee of a fund or organization: others trust him or her to wisely manage assets on their behalf. As those who are accountable to God, we must become responsible and trustworthy stewards of the time, physical bodies, money and possessions, gifts, and relationships God has given us.

Give It Up – to God

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9 ESV

Doing good, helping, caring for, giving, serving, relieving others, assisting, and bearing responsibility is a lot of weight at times. And it does seem like these things come in waves, when suddenly a lot of people and situations need your attention all at once. Don’t give up. Instead, give it up – to God. Give up your frustration and anxiety to God. Don’t quit. Keep working at it and eventually you will be glad you did.

Salvation

Salvation happens when a person confesses and repents of their sin and accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior (Matt. 3:2; Jn. 3:16; Lk. 24:47). We call it being saved. We are saved from God’s eternal judgment by entering into a covenant relationship with Him through Jesus. It isn’t just praying a prayer to ask God to forgive you. It’s more than that. When you and I stand before God, and we will, it will be about our relationship with Him and how we lived it out with others. Did we enter into a good relationship with God (Matt. 7:23)? The evidence of salvation is then found in how we live, and how we relate with others (Gal. 5:22-23). Jesus said to love God, and love people (Mk. 12:30-31). If we can’t love people we can see and touch, how can we begin to believe we truly love God (1 Jn. 4:20)?

Marcus and Jeanea Johnson

Building and Repairing Churches

Marcus and Jeanea are serving as missionaries in the U.S. through a ministry called Mission America Placement Service (MAPS). MAPS coordinates workers to assist churches and ministry institutions with construction and evangelism projects. Marcus said, “We do that through RV Volunteers, Church Teams, and Missionary Associates. One of the great aspects of MAPS is that it serves the other ministries of U.S. Missions as well as local churches and in turn the rest of the world. I believe if we strengthen the church in America, we strengthen our reach to the world.”

God Created You

02 The Person of Jesus Christ

Introduction

Man does not have the capability to fully understand God. God is perfect and holy, while man is morally flawed and sinful. To bridge the gap and to connect God and man, God took the form of a man in Jesus Christ. Without Jesus there would be no possibility of having a relationship with God.

Have you ever thought of witnessing not in terms of salesmanship or persuasion, but in terms of matchmaking? 11 The Lordship of Jesus Christ

Introduction

Jesus Christ is both Savior and Lord—not just the Lord of His followers but also the Lord of all lords. Not all people presently acknowledge Him as their Lord, but that does not alter the fact of His lordship. Someday in eternity, every single person will acknowledge Christ as Lord. Until then, anyone who is willing to trust Him totally has the privilege of coming under Christ’s influence and obeying His lordship. Christ becomes our Lord first by a decision made through trusting Him and then by the daily practice of willing obedience to His commands. Living out the moral absolutes of God’s Word is not easy or popular. In this world, many people seek freedom from all moral responsibility. 18 Living a Life of Integrity

Introduction

Living as a whole, integrated person can be challenging. We tend to put on masks, saying one thing but contradicting it by how we live. We struggle each day with issues of right versus wrong and good versus evil. We tend to rationalize our behavior and compromise God’s standards of integrity. We may explain away or ignore these sins. These are the vices of the virtuous—sins that may have become accepted as the norm. But God is holy, and we must not allow any compromise with sin to infiltrate our lives. Because God is light, He will graciously reveal what we try to hide so that we can grow in integrity.

Our character is like gold. We need to receive God’s deep mining and refining processes to become more like Christ. He uses various processes to mature us by refining or purifying our character. Without these two living revelations of God, we could not know who God is or how to find life through Him. Because God Himself authored the Bible and the Holy Spirit is present as we read, it is completely dependable and sufficient to shape our convictions and help us live life well. When we face hard decisions in life, we can trust the Word of our trustworthy God to guide us into true and wise choices. Ultimately, trust is involved in committing your all to the authority and sufficiency of Scripture.

Remembering Angela

Angela, 53, passed away on Sunday morning, 1/16/22. Her first day in heaven was her favorite day on earth, Sunday. We can only imagine how much she enjoyed the worship from all over the world that day.

Angela was born to her parents, J. Colen and Carol Lassiter, in Fairhope, Alabama, on November 25, 1968. When her father moved to pastor a church in St. Louis, there Angela met and then married the love of her life, Pastor/Chaplain John Eaton, in 1993. Together, they brought four beautiful and meaningful children into the world and welcomed a son-in-law into the family last year: John Michael (28), Laura Ashley (25) and husband Jacob, James-David (21), and Emma-Grace (18).
